WECHU continues tick surveillance

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has started its tick surveillance program in four parks and conservation areas throughout the region.

Ticks are prevalent in the region and are known to carry and spread Lyme disease.

"Ticks are out everywhere, so already we are receiving reports of ticks," said Health Promotions Specialist Anandeep Hans.

Already in 2026, there have been two cases of Lyme disease confirmed. There were 14 cases reported in 2025.

Students will be out in Malden Park and Woodland Trails, the Devonwood Conservation Area, Rowsom's Tilbury West Conservation Area, and the Chrysler Greenway in Harrow.

"Windsor-Essex County is endemic for ticks so we have been seeing ticks for a long time here. This is to strengthen our databases and get our message out to the public that ticks are out here," said Hans.

To prevent tick bites, the health unit recommends using insect repellent and wearing long, light coloured clothing while exploring outdoors.

In case of a tick bite, remove the insect with tweezers; don't squeeze or twist.

If the tick has been attached for more than 24 hours you should consult a healthcare professional.

"You can get the symptoms 3-30 days after, so it's always good to keep track of if you're feeling any flu-like symptoms or if a rash is developing," said Hans.
