Environment Canada isn't the only agency that has issued a heat warning for the next week. The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has issued one, saying it could be extended into the weekend.
The health unit issues an extended heat warning whenever there are three or more consecutive days where the temperature is expected to top 31 C, with a nighttime low of at least 21 C, or when the humidex tops 42 C.
Heat-related illness can be very serious. Symptoms include dizziness, headache, vomiting, weakness, and confusion. If you experience those symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
The health unit says everyone is at risk, but infants, seniors, young children, those with certain medical conditions, and those who work outside are most susceptible.
To avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke, drink lots of water, wear a wide-brimmed hat and light, loose-fitting clothing, take a cool bath or shower, and limit outdoor activities if possible. It also says never to leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, and to make time to visit family, friends, and neighbours in case they need assistance.
The heat warning starts Monday and will continue until Friday, July 3.
