Caldwell First Nation gathering donations for communities affected by wildfires

The Caldwell First Nation is accepting donations of essential items for First Nations communities affected by wildfires.

Several First Nations communities, including Namaygoosisagagun First Nation, Whitesand First Nation, Kiashke Zaaging Anishinaabek, and Animbiigoo Zaagi’igan Anishinaabek, had to be evacuated this week as fires raged throughout Northwestern Ontario.

Caldwell First Nation Chief Nikki van Oirschot encourages the community to donate funds to the Anishinabek Nation 7th Generation Charity, the Canadian Red Cross, or True North Aid to support the many families who have lost everything.

"To every Nation, family, and community affected by these wildfires: you are not alone. Caldwell First Nation stands beside you in solidarity and remains committed to supporting your recovery and healing in whatever ways we can," said van Oirschot. "We send our prayers for the safety of all those affected, for the protection of your territories, and for the day when every family can safely return home."

Donations of new clothing, essential items, or supplies can be dropped off at the Caldwell First Nation office on Orange Street in Leamington. All donations will be coordinated for delivery to First Nations communities affected by the wildfires.
