Windsor police will have a presence along the riverfront this long weekend.
Officers will be patrolling the shore and the Detroit River as more people are expected to be on the water for the Civic Holiday weekend.
Police have reminded people that before they go out on the water, they should make sure that they are wearing properly fitted life jackets. The fine for a missing life jacket is $200, plus $100 for each life jacket that is missing or not fitted properly.
Boaters should also know the rules of the water and stay aware of their surroundings, and bring a charged cell phone or marine radio.
When operating your vessel near shore, limit your speed to 10 kilometres per hour within 30 metres of land.
Operating a boat while impaired by alcohol or drugs is not only dangerous, but also illegal. Those who are convicted of it may face a minimum fine of $1,000, driver's licence suspension, and potential jail time.
Having open alcohol on board or cannabis readily available may result in a $175 fine for the operator and $100 for each passenger.
Other potential fines include $250 for failure to carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC), and up to $500 for careless or unsafe operation.
