The Gordie Howe International Bridge's multi-use trail for pedestrians and cyclists opened Wednesday morning, just in time for the release of a new cycle tourism map from Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island.
The map features six regional routes with connectivity to trails on the Detroit side of the border. It includes the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which contributed funding for the app through its community benefits plan.
"Today's opening marks a transformational moment for cycle tourism in Windsor-Essex," declared CEO Gordon Orr. "With the multi-use path opening, cyclists can experience a seamless active transportation connection between two countries, creating exciting opportunities for visitors to explore both sides of the border.
The opening of the trail on the bridge connects Detroit's growing trail network to infrastructure on this side of the border. The map offers cross-border route options and is integrated with Ride with GPS.
While the app will connect cyclists to attractions in the region, including wineries, natural areas, historic communities, restaurants, and waterfronts, it will also help them find 125 Bike-Friendly Certified businesses. Certified businesses offer services like secure bike parking, access to water, repair tools, and route information.
"The growth in our Bike-Friendly Certified businesses demonstrates the tourism industry's commitment to welcoming cycling visitors and recognizing the economic impact they bring to our communities," added Orr. "A 56 per cent increase in certified businesses shows that operators across Windsor-Essex see the value in cycle tourism and are investing in creating exceptional experiences for riders exploring our region."
Users can access digital route information and GPS tracking, making it easier to plan and navigate routes throughout Windsor, Essex County and Pelee Island.
