Travellers who use Windsor International Airport (YQG) will soon see infrastructure upgrades.
The Ministry of Transport has announced that the airport will receive $7.5-million in funding to enhance safety and passenger volumes. The funding comes from the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP).
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport Mike Kelloway was in Windsor on Wednesday for the announcement.
"For communities like Windsor, airports are more than transportation hubs," said Kelloway, the MP for Sydney-Glace Bay. "They connect people, support local businesses, welcome visitors, and help drive economic growth. Investments in our airports will strengthen those important connections and help ensure that Canadians and travellers can rely on safe, reliable air transportation for years to come."
The money will be used to restore the asphalt on Runway 7-25, and to buy a second Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting vehicle.
YQG President and CEO Mike Galvin said the federal funding will make Windsor an important hub.
"The nearly $7.5-million to Windsor International Airport through the Airports Capital Assistance Program allows for YQG to enhance safety and ensure that Windsor International Airport can continue to connect communities and be an economic and social driver for the region," said Galvin.
Since the ACAP was established in 1995, YQG has been awarded $14-million for safety improvements, counting Wednesday's announcement.
