The partnership between local emergency department nurses, social workers, and Windsor police has continued to make strides and reduce pressure on hospitals.
Windsor police provided a social media update on Wednesday concerning the progress made by the Nurse Police Team (NPT) and Crisis Response Team (CRT).
Since the beginning of 2026, the two teams have responded to over 4,300 calls for help across the city. Out of those, 1,896, or 44 per cent, were in the downtown core.
"As part of their high-visibility work downtown and across the city, these specialized teams support people experiencing mental health, substance use and other crises," read the post from Windsor police. "They help de-escalate situations, provide immediate support, and connect people with ongoing resources and services."
Interactions this year have resulted in 275 referrals for mental health services so far in 2026.
There were 485 cases where people were treated on the spot, making an emergency room visit unnecessary. The teams have used 191 naloxone kits so far this year, and 251 fentanyl test strips.
The NPT is a partnership between police and emergency room nurses from Windsor Regional Hospital. The CRT is a partnership with Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare.
