The hundreds of dead crows found in Chatham over the weekend are believed to have died from the avian influenza virus.
Six of the birds were tested by the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC), with help from the Canadian Wildlife Service, at the Animal Health Laboratory at the University of Guelph.
The results confirmed each had the virus.
"Based on these preliminary results, it is highly likely that the mortality affecting these crows is secondary to an infection with avian influenza," said Brian Stevens, a Wildlife Pathologist with the CWHC.
The CWHC is having the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) conduct its own tests before 100 per cent confirming the virus as the culprit.
