West Grey man charged following family dispute

Hanover police say a 32-year-old man has been charged after having to be coaxed down from a hydro tower on Wednesday evening.

Officers, with the help of West Grey police, were called to a family dispute at around 8:15 p.m. When they arrived, they found a man climbing a high-voltage hydro tower with live lines. At times, he was as much as 70 feet above the ground.

Police say he was armed with an axe, and drinking from a bottle of what appeared to be liquor.

Hanover Police Chief Christopher Knoll said that Hanover firefighters, Grey County paramedics, and personnel from Hydro One were also at the scene for precautionary purposes.

Shortly before 10 p.m., the man climbed down from the hydro tower on his own and was arrested.

An OPP negotiating team and an incident commander were also dispatched to the scene, but the situation ended shortly after they were requested.

Hydro One personnel went up the hydro tower to retrieve the suspect's axe. There was no service disruption to customers.

The West Grey resident has been charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, mischief, and breach of probation. He was held overnight and released from custody Thursday morning.

He will have a chance to respond to the charges in a Walkerton court next month.
