Water main flushing may impact Shallow Lake tap water

Shallow Lake area residents may experience changes to their tap water during routine infrastructure maintenance starting Monday. The Ontario Clean Water Agency will perform annual fire hydrant testing and water main flushing throughout the local distribution network to help ensure clean and reliable drinking water for the community.

According to the Municipality of Georgian Bluffs, the scheduled maintenance work is set to begin on Monday, August 24, and will run through Friday, September 18, 2026.

This routine process is an essential component of the municipality's comprehensive water management practices. Under normal conditions, drinking water flows slowly through municipal pipes, which naturally allows fine sediment to settle and collect over time. By opening the fire hydrants to flush the mains, crews temporarily increase the velocity of the water flow to clear out these accumulated deposits and safeguard overall water quality.

During the four-week maintenance window, local households and businesses may experience temporary changes to their utility service, including lower water pressure or slight discolouration in their supply. If discoloured water occurs at the tap, residents are advised to run their cold water faucets for four to five minutes until the stream flows completely clear again.

It is important to avoid using hot water during this brief clearing process to keep sediment out of water heaters, and laundry should be postponed until water clarity is fully restored to prevent potential staining on clothing.

Community members who have questions or require further assistance regarding the flushing program can reach out directly to the Ontario Clean Water Agency at 519-483-3555 or contact the Township of Georgian Bluffs at 519-376-2729.
