Pipeline leak located, over a week after St. Clair River spill

Sun-Canadian Pipe Line (SCPL) says the site of a leak, believed to be responsible for a spill to the St. Clair River earlier this month has been located.

In an update through the Aamjiwnaang Notification System, Sun-Canadian said the site of the leak was identified Saturday morning, and the pipeline is still shut down.

"We are continuing to complete integrity assessment activities to address the hydrocarbon release that occurred in the area of Sun Ave and St Clair Parkway," said the email.

On March 11, the Suncor said it identified a hydrocarbon sheen on the river near the Sarnia refinery, and deployed response equipment including booms to contain and clean the spill.

At the time of the spill, Suncor said all appropriate regulatory agencies and local community organizations were notified, and St. Clair Township said the municipal water system was not affected.

The source was identified as a distribution pipeline owned by Sun-Canadian Pipeline.

SCPL said it is communicating and engaging with local stakeholders, community representatives and regulatory authorities.

"Our priority remains the safety of people, the protection of the environment, and the safe operation of our infrastructure," read the email.

The update did not indicate how much was spilled to the St. Clair River.

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is investigating.
