Kingsville approves bylaw to charge for repeated false alarms

Residents and businesses in the Town of Kingsville will now be charged if the OPP respond to more than one false alarm in a year.

The town passed a bylaw Monday night that introduces a $150 fee for the second time the OPP responds to a false alarm at the same address, and a $375 fee for each call after that.

The original recommendation was to charge after the third call, but councillors felt one false alarm was enough to educate someone on when to call 9-1-1.

"I think three times is going way above and beyond," said Councillor Larry Patterson.

The OPP said repeated false alarms cost the service $52,000.
