Windsor-based artist, storyteller, and community educator, Teajai Travis, is set to walk from Ottawa to Windsor---an initiative he describes as "a personal pilgrimage and community initiative designed to encourage reflection, gratitude, and collective responsibility."
"750 For Peace" will begin on July 1, Canada Day, on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and ends in Windsor's Jackson Park on August 1, Emancipation Day.
Travis said the journey begins in Parliament Hill as it represents the beacon of hope his ancestors were seeking out, while its final stop in Jackson Park falls on "the home of the greatest freedom show on Earth."
"I think a lot about ancestry, about lineage. Every step I take from Ottawa to Windsor is a thank you," said Travis. "Thank you so much for the opportunity to be able to do this long walk."
As he passes through communities across Ontario, he invites people to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the shared values of kindness, compassion, and unity. Alongside its symbolic purpose, it is also a fundraising initiative to support youth in Windsor-Essex.
"I'm walking 750 kilometres to let people know that we have an amazing space like the Sandwich Teen Action Group," said Travis.
Also known as the 'STAG', the non-profit community youth centre provides a safe haven for teens aged 13-19, offering recreational activities, homework support, counselling, and mentorship.
Funds will also benefit the Windsor Youth Centre, a space for homeless and at-risk youth aged 16-24, offering essential services including hot meals, hygiene items, and one-on-one support.
"The walk is not about me at all. It's about the legacy of the ancestors that made this life possible for me, but also the responsibility to give back, to put the youth right in the forefront so they can take on the baton one day, and they can be continuing on this good work," said Travis.
During the month-long walk, Travis said supporters are invited to participate by sponsoring kilometres of the walk, donating monetary contributions or practical needs such as food, travel costs, and walking gear, or by simply walking along.
