An evening event held in memory of a cherished local teacher is taking place this Saturday.
The 14th annual Light Up The Night For Noelle Run/Walk will be held at Canatara Park on September 26 at 7 p.m.
Race Director Bryan Cowden said there will be five and 10 kilometre timed runs, a one kilometre timed kids race and a five kilometre walk.
"Right now we have 260 [participants] registered and we'll be closing in on 300 now that the weather [forecast] is looking nice," said Cowden.
You can register online at NoellesGift.ca until Friday at noon, or by paying in-person at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Cowden said all of the funds raised will support students within the Lambton Kent and St. Clair Catholic District School Boards.
"We usually get about $15,000, and that's our goal this year," he said. "Both school boards benefit from the monies raised from this race, either through the closet initiative, the nutritional program, or the general funds the schools get to distribute to students in need."
Cowden said they're challenging education workers to compete for the top spot in the highest amount raised.
"It is something new, we're just trying to get more involvement from the school boards and I do see an increase [in registration], so it's looking good," he said.
But, Cowden notes, they could use some extra help and are still looking for volunteers. "We need about 20 course marshals, so you can register for that online as well at NoellesGift.ca in the event section," said Cowden.
Noelle's Gift was established in memory of Noelle Paquette. The St. Clair Catholic District School Board kindergarten teacher was killed in January, 2013.
