UPDATE: Eight displaced in fire near downtown Windsor

Windsor fire investigators say eight people are looking for a place to stay after a house fire near the downtown core.

Firefighters responded to the scene on Elliott Street West near Church Street shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday, and noticed heavy smoke coming from the one-and-a-half-storey house.

Multiple crews and Windsor police appeared on location, and the fire was soon brought under control.

Volunteers from the Canadian Red Cross were soon at the scene to help those who were displaced.

A fire investigator was at the scene most of Tuesday afternoon, but the cause of the fire has been listed as undetermined. The fire began in the basement behind a hot water tank and the furnace, where combustibles were stored against the appliances.

There were also no working smoke alarms on the first or second floors.

Damage is estimated at $200,000.
