A $30,000 donation from Caesars Windsor Cares to the UHC Hub of Opportunities will ensure more people using food banks get the protein they need to stay healthy.
The casino's committee handed over the cheque on Thursday to exclusively buy meat and other protein products for distribution among the 15 members of the Windsor-Essex Food Bank Association.
"Protein is often the first nutritious item to disappear from household budgets, yet it is critical to health and development," said UHC Hub of Opportunities CEO June Muir. "This funding helps address a growing nutritional gap."
Many families in the region find it hard to afford meat as the cost of living rises. It's not expected to get easier this year. Meat prices are expected to continue to increase.
Meanwhile, more people in the region than ever are using food banks.
Members of the Windsor Essex Food Bank Association reported over 254,000 visits last year, up nine per cent from 2024. UHC Hub of Opportunities sees 300 visits daily.
"Now more than ever, it is important to support our local food banks, and with this donation, Caesars Windsor is proud to ensure resources are available to meet the increasing demand to help our neighbours in need," said SVP and General Manager at Caesars Windsor, Jody Brown.
With the donation, the food bank can buy 5,000 one-pound packages of meat that otherwise would not be available.
