After a bumpy three-and-a-half year ride through Chatham court, a man accused of murdering another man in Tilbury in 2023 finally has his trial dates tentatively set.
Ken Baylis, 37, appeared in Chatham Assignment Court on Thursday to set dates for his two week trial, tentatively scheduled to begin on November 8.
Baylis is set to have the trial dates confirmed on September 21, pending a resolution that has been in the works for numerous months and a determination on whether the trial will be judge and jury or judge alone.
The lawyers were previously told that the time limit to hold a trial for Baylis lapsed in October 2025 and that delay is a concern for the court. Unreasonable delay of a trial can result in charges being permanently stayed or dismissed.
A focus hearing to be held in October and preliminary hearings to be held in November and December were cancelled in July.
Baylis was set to plead guilty in November and December 2025, but the defence told the court that more time was needed to complete the resolution and resolve some outstanding issues.
Baylis was charged with second-degree murder in April 2023 after Daniel Marchand, 45, was reported missing and later found dead at a home on Dufferin Avenue in Tilbury.
The case is under a publication ban, and evidence cannot be reported.
