Wanted offender arrested following police foot chase

A wanted man was arrested by police Monday night after a foot chase in central Sarnia.

Shortly before 8 p.m., a Sarnia police officer in the area of Durand Street and Blanche Avenue recognized a man riding a bike in the area and knew there was warrant out for his arrest.

The officer followed the man to a driveway on James Street where it's alleged the suspect frantically tried to get into a residence through the side door, at which time the officer approached and told him he was under arrest.

Police said when the officer tried to take physical control of the suspect, he immediately resisted, slipped his jacket and took off.

Following a short foot pursuit, the officer was able to catch up with him and took the suspect to the ground.

There was a struggle and it's alleged the suspect struck the officer and broke free a second time.

He took off running and it's alleged the suspect was seen attempting to get something from his pocket.  As he tried to jump over a fence, the officer was able to grab a pant leg, pinning him halfway over the fence.

Police claim the suspect continued to try to access something in his pocket during the struggle.

Fearing a weapon, the officer deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon (TASER), but that was only partially effective, and the officer applied multiple empty-hand strike/techniques to gain control.

The suspect was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries and abrasions while the officer was not hurt.

During a search of the suspect, police located a folding knife in his pocket.

The 39-year-old is charged with resisting an officer and two counts of breach of probation.

Police said he was remanded into custody following a bail hearing.
