Hundreds expected for Powwow in Downtown Windsor

The Can-Am Indian Friendship Centre invites the community to a Powwow in Downtown Windsor to celebrate National Indigenous History Month.

The Powwow at Charles Clarke Square will feature hundreds of dancers, musicians, Indigenous artisan vendors, and food trucks.

"It's about everyone coming together, it's about celebrating history, and celebrating the art, and celebrating music, and giving people a chance to spend time with family," said Sarah Rouseau, President, CAIFC Board of Directors.

Rouseau indicated holding the Powwow in downtown Windsor helps to honour the urban Indigenous culture that lives in cities across Canada.

"This is our community. This is the Windsor Indigenous groups that are coming together in Windsor, in the downtown core," said Rouseau. "It's accessible for anybody, anybody in Windsor can jump on a bus, come downtown, and they can really get an opportunity to experience the local Indigenous culture."

The Grand Entrance will begin at noon on June 26, 2026. The Powwow will continue until 9 p.m.

Organizers are expecting between 500 and 1,000 attendees.

"Anything that brings people to the downtown core and brings people together and promotes culture, arts, history is good for downtown. That's what downtowns are for," said Ward 3 Councillor Renaldo Agostino.

All are welcome to attend the free event. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs as seating is limited.
